HOW DO YOU WORK WITH SUSTAINABILITY AT LABEL YOURSELF?
Nothing is truly sustainable. But that does not mean we cannot stay curious, ask questions and keep improving in a more sustainable direction over time.
At Label Yourself, we want to offer our customers solutions that, through selected material choices or stages of production, may have a lower climate impact than comparable standard products. We are constantly working to find alternatives with improved environmental properties in selected areas, but we have also learned that it is not simple.
Our ambition is always to offer you the best possible choices as a customer. A festival wristband has significant value because it works as a ticket and, not least, helps ensure that the guest has access to the festival, hotel or VIP areas. Similarly, lanyards with badges are a useful tool at trade fairs, making it easy to identify one another and view the programme. That is why quality has to be top-notch.
Label Yourself is a trustworthy business partner. We do not make claims we cannot stand behind. Our goal is transparency, so you can make an informed choice when you choose to place your orders with us. That is why you will not find labels such as eco-friendly, sustainable, green or climate-friendly at Label Yourself. Instead, we describe our products using all the information available to us, so you can make the decision that best matches your purchasing policy, whether you prefer recycled material, bamboo, cotton or EU production.
WHAT IS YOUR MOST SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT?
We are sometimes asked: “What is the most sustainable wristband?” or “What should I choose if I want sustainable lanyards?” or “Do you have sustainable stickers?” We cannot give you a clear-cut answer to this. We cannot and must not compare across materials. All products have advantages and disadvantages: some materials are well suited for recycling but may require large amounts of chemicals or water during production, while others require oil.
It is also important to remember that your need for, for example, access control is not the same as that of our other customers. One customer may need durable wristbands that can withstand many hours in a swimming pool, while another may need a wristband for just a few hours at a seated event. That is why we have an extensive product range, allowing us to offer you a product that suits your event.
THOUGHTFUL PURCHASING
Buy with a focus on using products again and again. Choose high-quality lanyards and high-quality plastic badge holders. When you order quality products, you can easily reuse lanyards and conference badges many times. They are easy to collect when the conference or trade fair ends. Just make sure to communicate this clearly to participants and have boxes and helpers ready at the exit to collect the used lanyards. Our silicone wristbands are also a good example of products that are reused until they are worn out, for example in swimming pools.
The choice of transport will often affect the total CO₂ footprint, which is why, where possible, we choose sea freight rather than air freight. A calculation from our freight forwarder shows that for 35,000 festival wristbands, emissions are 30 kg by sea freight compared with 1,056 kg CO₂ by air freight. The calculation is based on standard assumptions from our freight forwarder and may vary depending on the route and shipment.
COLLECT FESTIVAL WRISTBANDS
We always encourage our customers to collect festival wristbands after use, so the material is sorted correctly and can be recycled. It may be a small action in the bigger picture, but it can help raise awareness of recycling. We can reuse most EasyLock closures by attaching them to new wristbands. The wristband itself can be handed in to companies that convert the material into new textiles. We are always happy to discuss the options with you if you need guidance.
CERTIFICATIONS
Several of our products have recognised certifications.
Our
name bands are OEKO-TEX certified, and we can confirm that at least 80% of the yarn used in the name bands is recycled. Our woven rPET festival wristbands are also OEKO-TEX certified.
In addition, we have several FSC-certified products. “FSC is the world’s most ambitious global certification for responsible forest management and your assurance that wood and paper come from well-managed forests and other responsible sources. FSC works to support both nature and people’s conditions in the world’s forest areas.” (Source:
FSC.)
The certifications document specific conditions, such as materials or chemical requirements, and are not a guarantee that the product as a whole is more environmentally friendly than other products.
PRODUCTION BUILT ON MANY YEARS OF COLLABORATION
Our suppliers and production partners are carefully selected, and we have close, long-term relationships built on mutual respect. We have worked with most of our suppliers for more than 15 years.
We have production in both Europe and the Far East. Over the past 10 years, we have visited our production facilities in China every other year, and it is our ambition to continue doing so. We are aware that there can be many differences between China and Europe, but by visiting the factories regularly, we have confidence in the processes and working conditions. We maintain close day-to-day dialogue with our production partners and continuously require updated certificates.
AUDIT
When we visit our production facilities in China, we base our review on the following audit areas:
- Processes and workflows
- Quality and control
- Working environment and safety
- Equipment and maintenance
- Environment and waste
